FACTS ABOUT THE SCENERY

THE MASON-DIXON LINE:
For over 100 years, supporters of William Penn and Lord Baltimore disputed the location of the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland. From 1763 to 1767, two British astronomers, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, carried out a survey to mark this boundary, now known as the Mason-Dixon Line.

BORDEN TUNNEL:
The Borden Tunnel was constructed by the Western Maryland Railroad in 1911. The tunnel is 957 feet long and is located just south of the Mason-Dixon Line. The Borden Tunnel is the last tunnel in Maryland before entering Pennsylvania.

FROSTBURG DEPOT:
The Frostburg Depot was constructed in 1891 and served as a passenger and freight station. In 1989 the Depot (formerly the C&P Railroad Depot) was restored to accommodate a restaurant and is currently the Western Terminus of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The abandoned Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad Tunnel was constructed in 1857 beneath the City of Frostburg. When renovated the 570 foot tunnel will allow hikers and bikers easy access to Main Street from the Frostburg Depot.

BRUSH TUNNEL:
The Brush Tunnel will be a shared access portion of the trail. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad will continue to use this tunnel. The 912 foot long tunnel was built in 1911.

BONE CAVE:
Bone Cave was discovered in 1912 when the Western Maryland Railroad was making a cut through a ridge near Corriganville. From this small cave, the U.S. National Museum recovered the remains of 46 species of animals, many of which are now extinct. The opening to the cave can be seen on the south wall cut at the level of the railbed.

THE NARROWS:
The Narrows is a spectacular 1,000 foot gorge that bisects Wills and Haystack Mountains.

HISTORIC CUMBERLAND:
From the Historic City of Cumberland view the Narrows and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath National Historic Park. The park is located on 3,000 acres within the picturesque Potomac River Greenway in Allegany County.

C&O CANAL TOWPATH:
The 184.5 mile C&O Canal marked the beginning of commerce between Cumberland and Washington D.C. Cumberland is the Western Terminus for the C&O Canal Towpath and the Eastern Terminus for the Allegheny Highlands Trail.
